WDSD 2025 “Improve Our Support Systems” – Sweden

It’s getting harder to access support for activities like visiting the cinema, as applications for a support person are increasingly denied—even though they are vital for many persons with Down Syndrome to live like others.

Many individuals with Down syndrome living in supported housing are losing their support companions or contact persons. Without this help, they are unable to go shopping, exercise, attend hockey games or dance classes, or even visit family. As a result, many are becoming isolated, which can have serious negative effects on their health and well-being.

Sweden must take urgent action to reverse this trend. Politicians must introduce meaningful reforms to our support systems and ensure that people with Down syndrome have the same opportunities as everyone else to stay connected, engaged, and included in society.

Personer med Downs syndrom får allt oftare avslag på ansökningar om kontaktperson, trots att detta är ett nödvändigt stöd för många för att kunna leva som andra och till exempel gå på bio.
